WILLIAMSBURG — The President of Sentara Williamsburg Regional Center, Amber Price, was named as Honorary Chair of the 2022 Williamsburg Walk to End Alzheimer’s, an annual fundraising event that helps raise awareness and support for the Alzheimer’s Association.
“I am honored to be the Honorary Chair of the 2022 Williamsburg Walk to End Alzheimer’s,” said Price in an Alzheimer’s Association, Central and Western Virginia, Greater Richmond and Southeastern Virginia Chapters announcement. “The Alzheimer’s Association provides many services to families that currently living with Alzheimer’s, and has an office in Williamsburg. I’m excited to be a part of this event and to raise money and awareness for this great cause.”
This year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place on Oct. 22 in New Town. Event organizers are expecting around 700 people from the Greater Williamsburg area to participate in this year’s walk.
According to The Alzheimer’s Association, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research programs.
The event has local walks with different fundraising goals scheduled all over the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. The 2022 Williamsburg Walk to End Alzheimer’s has a fundraising goal of $206,500. According to the Williamsburg walk’s official event page , 35% of that goal has already been raised, $71,682 as of Sept. 12.
More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, which is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States, according to The Alzheimer’s Association.
Each registered participant will receive a Promise Garden flower that will be featured in a ceremony on the day of the walk. Different colored flowers represent a participant’s connection to the disease:
- Blue: represents someone living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia.
- Purple: represents an individual who has lost someone to the disease.
- Yellow: represents a participant who is supporting or currently caring for a person living with Alzheimer’s.
- Orange: According to The Alzheimer’s Association’s website, “Orange is for those who support the cause and the Association’s vision of a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.”
For those who can’t take part in the Williamsburg event, Newport News is also hosting a 2022 Walk to End Alzheimer’s event on Saturday, Oct. 15. All walks support the Alzheimer’s Association.
