
HENRICO — William & Mary student Zhykierra Guy died on Aug. 5 near her home in Henrico County, a victim of gun violence, the college announced Friday evening.
Henrico Police are investigating her death as a homicide.
The rising senior was a Government major and a Business minor planning to graduate in May 2023, with future plans for graduate study in either law or business, Vice President for Student Affairs Ginger Ambler said in an email to the William & Mary community.
According to local media reports, Henrico police said the 22-year-old was found in the passenger seat of a car that had been struck by gunfire just before 2 a.m. Despite efforts to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
As an undergraduate, she started an online retail hair extensions business called “Lavish Hair Zesty Girls” in 2021. She also loved dance and pursued that passion while at William & Mary, according to the email.
“She was dedicated to giving all her love to family and friends. Her energy and soul touched many students there, and we are grateful as parents for the time she was given to us on earth,” her mother, Lakisha Hamlett, is quoted in the email.
Zhykierra is survived by her parents, Hamlett and Shanta Guy, a brother, Atnahs Guy, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 15 at 2 p.m. at County Line Baptist Church in Vernon Hill. All students, faculty, and staff are welcome.
