YORKTOWN — Blue skies and fair winds greeted 188 runners and walkers for the 31st running of the Yorktown Rotary Club’s annual Freedom Run on Memorial Day, May 30.
The 8K run/walk across the Yorktown Battlefield is a Peninsula Track Club Grand Prix event as well as a Hampton Roads Super Grand Prix event.
All Proceeds go to the Yorktown Rotary Foundation for Youth Activities, Scholarships, and Community Service Projects.
The York County Sheriff’s Office and Fire Department were on hand to provide safety support throughout the course. A color guard from Boy Scout Troop 200 and York High School Navy Junior Reserve Officer Cadets conducted flag ceremonies.
Top overall finishers for men were Roger Hopper of Chesapeake, 25:36; Zachary Helm of Norfolk, 26:33; and Sean Bush of Williamsburg, 27:50.
Top overall finishers for women were Maria Spady of Hampton, 30:27; Emily Honeycutt of Newport News, 32:58; and Kristin Roberts of Alexandria, 33:08. Spady’s time was a new course record for women.

York County Historical Committee member, Tim Smith provided Memorial Day comments and the 131 names of the York County fallen were memorialized on the field adjacent to York High School.
