Each one of us has been touched one way or another by the insidious disease known as cancer.
It does not discriminate and is one of the leading causes of death worldwide – and the number one killer in Virginia.
Now, there is new hope. Tremendous advances are being made in this ongoing battle, especially with the constantly encouraging results from an increasingly successful form of radiation – proton therapy.
Through advocacy, education and state-of-the-art precision medicine, the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute (HUPTI) has been treating breast, lung, head and neck, ocular, GI, brain and spine, pediatric and prostate cancer since its inception from Hampton University’s President, Dr. William R. Harvey.
Now, this trailblazing Institute has successfully treated over 3,100 patients from across the nation and several foreign countries and is the largest freestanding proton therapy facility in the world.
Engineered to be an environment where science and compassion meet, HUPTI’s advanced technologies and incredible, passionate staff continue to work together to bring patients and their families the very best in focused cancer care.
“Proton therapy centers offer several clear advantages for cancer treatment, but because of the complexity of the equipment, the extraordinary size of the building and radiation shielding, they are also quite costly. In fact, they are far too expensive for most cities and medical centers to handle. However, thanks to the vision and perseverance of Dr. Harvey, the driving force behind the center since its inception, Hampton Roads has joined a small, elite group of cities that offers this vitally important cancer therapy.” – Dr. Christopher Sinesi, MD, Medical Director, HUPTI.
Proton therapy is the most precise form of radiation. Unlike more normally prescribed cancer treatments, proton therapy has little to no side effects and is noninvasive. The proton beam primarily targets the tumor, killing it layer by layer and minimizing damaging effects on the surrounding cells and tissue.
At HUPTI, treatments are planned according to diagnosis and only last about 30 minutes, including preparation time. They firmly believe that the quality of care given to every patient is a crucial component to recovery, which is why many HUPTI patients continue their daily routines and activities uninterrupted while undergoing proton therapy.
Recently installed multimillion-dollar top-of-the-line equipment and machines help to further cement the worldwide reputation of HUPTI. State-of-the-art MRI and CT/PET scanning equipment enable HUPTI to treat more accurately and conduct ongoing research into the precise localization and identification of borders between cancer and the surrounding healthy tissues. These rapidly evolving technologies allow us to see images in much smaller and precise detail, allowing more accurate diagnoses. Similarly, these new machines offer much more flexibility while producing same day scans, thus eliminating the anxiety of waiting, sometimes days, for the results.
Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute has successfully treated a wide variety of cancers for over 11 years, including some of the most technically challenging cases from across the country.
