Search Suspended After a Woman is Found Dead Near James River

NEWPORT NEWS — The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search for a missing woman after a body was found near the James River.

The 58-year-old woman was reported missing after falling off a raft in the evening hours of Sunday, March 27 at the Deep Creek Inlet near the Warwick Yacht and Country Club in Newport News.

Local teams were assembled, including York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office and York County Department of Fire and Life Safety, to search for the woman. Additionally, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) aided in the search with its 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew out of the USCG base in Portsmouth along with an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from USCG Air Station Elizabeth City (N.C.).

The joint effort to find the missing woman covered 518 square miles throughout a 16 hour period.

The day after the woman was reported missing, a resident discovered a body near the Menchville Marina (also in Newport News) and promptly contacted the Newport News Police Department. The person found is reported to match the description of the woman who was reported missing.

The identity of the victim has not been revealed at this time.
