WILLIAMSBURG — The City of Williamsburg’s Economic Development Department won a Gold Rank from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) for its 2019 Annual Report.

The honor was presented Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2021, at an awards ceremony during the IEDC Annual Conference. Williamsburg Economic Development won in the category of Annual
Report.

Williamsburg Economic Development Department’s 2019 Annual Report was the department’s first annual report and covered the department’s 2019 activities in the areas of job creation, job retention, tax base enhancements, and quality of life. The document explained the department’s programs for existing businesses, entrepreneurship, regional cooperation, sense-of-place projects, and targeted incentives for new businesses. Specifically, the report highlighted economic development return on investment to the City and its residents.

“We are so proud of our 2019 Economic Development Report. It was a first for our department, a small but mighty team of three,” Acting Director of Economic Development Yuri Adams said. “We don’t often have a chance to step back and absorb how much this department and our business community have accomplished, and this annual report helps us share that message with our city leadership, our partners, and our community at large.”

IEDC’s Excellence in Economic Development Awards recognize the world’s best economic development programs and partnerships, marketing materials, and the year’s most influential leaders. Twenty-five award categories honor organizations and individuals for their efforts in creating positive change in urban, suburban, and rural communities.

Awards are judged by a diverse panel of economic and community developers. IEDC received more than 500 submissions from four countries during the nomination process held earlier this year.

“The winners of IEDC’s Excellence in Economic Development awards represent the best of economic development and exemplify the leadership that our profession strives for every day,” said 2021 IEDC Board Chair and Invest Buffalo Niagara, President, and CEO Tom Kucharski. “We’re honored to recognize the more than 100 communities whose marketing submissions, projects, and partnerships have improved regional quality of life.”

The International Economic Development Council (IEDC) is a non-profit, non-partisan membership organization serving economic developers. With more than 5,000 members, IEDC is the largest organization of its kind.
