The James City County Police Department will be offering four, free one-session firearm safety courses to the public through April at the county’s Law Enforcement Center.

The first class is Saturday.

“Each one-session class will cover basic safety, handling, storage and laws related to carrying a concealed handgun in the Commonwealth of Virginia,” according to a James City County Police Department news release.

“The course does not include hands-on training, and personal firearms should be left at home in a secure location,” the department added.

The one-session classes will be offered at the Law Enforcement Center, 4600 Opportunity Way from 9-11:30 a.m. on the following dates:

  • Feb. 27
  • March 13
  • March 20
  • April 17

Project ChildSafe will make free gunlocks available to participants.

Participants are required to wear a mask or cloth face covering (over the nose and mouth) at all times during the course. Participants will also be required to maintain social distancing from those not residing in the same household.

Pre-registration is required and must be completed online. Due to Gov. Ralph Northam’s executive order on COVID-19 restrictions, class sizes are very limited.

Those with questions are encouraged to contact Master Officer Alan McDowell at 757-603-6026 or alan.mcdowell@jamescitycountyva.gov.
