A local family will have a new house, thanks to excess shoes.

The Walmart Import Distribution Center associates in James City County partnered with Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg to build houses from money raised by donated shoes. Those shoes were sold by Habitat for Humanity as a fundraiser.

“It’s a unique contribution to make a family’s dreams come true,” stated a press release from the partnering organizations.

The two organizations are holding a groundbreaking ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on March 27 at 122 Howard Drive, the site of the house.

Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg partners with area families, local government, businesses, faith groups, schools, associations and individual volunteers and donors to build and renovate affordable homes for sale to low-income families, according to its website.
