Democrat Shelly Simonds wins Newport News house seat by 1 vote, creating 50-50 tie

Shelly Simonds won election to the House of Delegates by one vote, the Newport News Board of Elections said Tuesday.

In the end, it came down to one vote.

Delegate-elect Shelly Simonds has won election to the House of Delegates representing District 94 in Newport News, defeating David Yancey by a single vote Tuesday, according to a release from the Virginia House Democratic Caucus.

Her win means the House of Delegates is evenly divided, 50-50, between Democrats and Republicans.

“We are ecstatic to welcome Shelly Simonds to our caucus,” House Democratic Leader David J. Toscano and Caucus Chair Charniele Herring said in the release.

Neither Simonds nor Yancey could be reached immediately for comment before publication.

In the release, she thanked the voters who turned out on Election Day.

“Everyone came out and we rocked this town,” she said. “I am so grateful to live in such a vibrant city like Newport News where people are so engaged.”

According to her candidate Facebook page, her campaign filed a request for a recount in Newport News Circuit Court on Nov. 29.

The result was announced by the Newport News Board of Elections, the release said, and the circuit court will meet Wednesday to finalize the results.
