His roots are in Williamsburg, but country musician Canaan Smith’s star is on the rise. He’ll perform Friday in Hampton as part of the city’s Military Concert Series.
Free general admission tickets, with a maximum of four per person, are available on a first come, first served basis at the Hampton Visitor Center, 120 Old Hampton Lane, in the city’s downtown. Visitor center hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Smith is a 2001 graduate of Lafayette High School and performed with a Christian alternative rock group from the sixth grade through high school. He returned to Williamsburg in June 2015 to perform at the Lake Matoaka Amphitheatre, which celebrated the release of his debut album, Bronco, and kicked off his tour to support it.
More than 2,000 locals – among them former teachers, neighbors and old friends – came out to the show. The next month, Smith’s first single off the album, “Love You Like That,” reached No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart and marked another milestone for the singer.
The title track of his album was written in honor of his late brother, Nathaniel, who died in a car accident in Williamsburg at 16 years old.
Friday’s concert will begin at 7 p.m. at the Hampton Coliseum Park, adjacent to the Hampton Coliseum.
