WILLIAMSBURG — The City of Williamsburg Planning Commission Work Session will take place on Oct. 27, 2021, at 4:00 p.m. at the Stryker Center.

There is only one item on the agenda: a Neighborhood Balance Committee (NBC) Report.

According to a sixty-five slide PowerPoint presentation on the Williamsburg Civic website, the committee plans to examine housing/rental programs related to zoning issues that the work session will address in more detail.

Some of the topics of discussion mentioned in the slideshow include:
Certified Rental Property Program
Trash Cart Ordinance
Annual Town/Grown Report
Adopt-a-Cop Academy
Nuisance Property Ordinance
Community Land Trust
Preservation Assistance Program
Direct Loan Program
Inclusionary Zoning
Hotel to Affordable Housing Conversation
Community Land Trust
Housing Needs Analysis
Direct Loan Program
Inclusionary Zoning
Planning Advisory Council
University Sponsored Inspector
University Sponsored Employee Housing
Fraternity Zoning

The discussion over the rental properties and the surrounding college community has been a hot topic for William & Mary students, residents of the surrounding college area, and the City Council.

On August 12, the City Council voted unanimously to put a pause on issuing new certificates of occupancy to homeowners seeking to put four individuals on one lease for single-family rental properties. Some of the reasons included various noise complaints, property upkeep/management, and parking.

The NBC report shows possible directions that the city can take, as well as directions the city has already taken, in regards to these housing issues in the city.

WYDaily will continue to follow this developing story.
