YORKTOWN — At the York County Board of Supervisors’ meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 21, representatives from the Williamsburg Area Transit Authority (WATA) presented their plans for a bus route that would stretch into southern York County.

The new route is slated to include stops at the York-Poquoson Courthouse, 300 Ballard Street down U.S. 17 to Victory Boulevard near the Wal-Mart Supercenter.

The plan was briefed by the WATA Executive Director Zach Trogdon. He said the line would include stops off of the highway at Grafton High School and Hampton Highway.

WATA recently received a $1.5 million dollar grant from the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program (CMAQ). When the transit service first applied for funding for the 18-mile route in 2015, the plan included service to the Lackey Clinic on Old Williamsburg Road. In the time since the proposal was submitted WATA has been able to create a route to service Lackey.

“The route will be just over 18-miles, nine out and nine back,” Trogdon told the board. “We will be operating on the hour, meaning it will pass each stop every hour. If we wanted to cut that down to 30-minutes, we would just put another bus on the route.”

Trogdon estimated that the route would service on average about 200 people a day. Ridership county-wide would get a boost due to the route that currently ends on Lackey Road would be extended to the courthouse, there by connecting riders in upper and lower York County.
