WILLIAMSBURG — Local graduating high school seniors planning to pursue an art degree in college can now apply for a scholarship from the Williamsburg Contemporary Art Center (WCAC).

Every spring since 2005, WCAC awards art scholarships to any York County high school senior (including those living in the district that are homeschooled), who are interested in studying art as a major or minor in college.

The focus of study must be in the “art field,” which could include art education, museum management, graphic arts, or studio arts.

Karen Schwartz, who heads the WCAC Art Scholarship Committee, said that up to four scholarships totaling $2,000 will be awarded to those who demonstrate an ability in art.

This year’s scholarships are sponsored by Ron & Patricia Rapoport.

The scholarships can be used at any accredited college or university and are credited to the students’ account at the school they register with.

Students can apply it towards tuition or anything they can use their student-ID card to purchase.

This year’s scholarship application requires an essay, which asks students to describe their art and what it means to them, what role do they anticipate art will play in their lives, and to describe their favorite art project.

Students must also include their portfolios which must have eight to fifteen digital images of their original artwork that reflects the student’s areas of concentration, such as painting, ceramics or drawing. The application also requires two letters of recommendation.

Past scholarship recipients went on to pursue art degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University, Savannah College of Art and Design, William & Mary, and more.

Applications for the 2021 Art Scholarships must be mailed to the scholarship committee by Tuesday, June 1.

With WCAC currently closed due to the pandemic, letters of recommendation, applications, and portfolios should be mailed to the WCAC Art Scholarship Committee at 5 Season’s Court, Williamsburg, VA 23188.
