A former substitute teacher with the Newport News Public Schools was sentenced Tuesday to five years in prison for receiving and uploading images of child sexual abuse.

According to court documents, in March of 2018, Michael Scott Porter, 51, of Newport News, uploaded images of child sexual abuse to a Microsoft OneDrive account.

Microsoft reported the incident to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Authorities got search warrants for the account and Porter’s home.

During the search, law enforcement found more than 2,400 images of child sexual abuse in the Microsoft OneDrive account as well as on other devices in Porter’s home, federal prosecutors said.

Besides being a former substitute teacher, Porter was also involved in the public school’s Mid-Atlantic Teen Challenge, Newport News Police said shortly after Porter’s arrest in 2018.
