After more than a year of construction, Riverside Health System’s new rehabilitation hospital in York County in finally finished.

In April 2018, Riverside broke ground on a 50-bed, 52,000-square-foot rehabilitation facility on Josephs Drive off Route 17.

“This location will make inpatient rehabilitation services even more accessible to people throughout the entire community, up into the Middle Peninsula and maybe even parts of the Northern Neck that have not typically been able to get easy access to those services,” said Bill Downey, president and CEO of Riverside Health System.

Recently, Select Medical and Riverside Health System hosted a ribbon cutting to celebrate the collaboration on the March 2017 agreement to operate the rehabilitation hospital, according in a news release from Riverside.

“We formed the joint venture with Riverside Health with a commitment to work together to provide the highest quality care for Virginia’s coastal communities,” said Jeff Ruskan, president of the Rehabilitation Hospital Division for Select Medical, in the news release.

The hospital will start accepting patients this month. Once open, it will be the only freestanding rehabilitation hospital in Hampton Roads.

“You will see a state-of-the-art rehabilitation hospital that will provide outstanding care to residents of York County and the Peninsula,” Downey said.

The new rehabilitation office will provide jobs for more than 200 administrative and clinical professionals. This will include employees from Riverside’s rehabilitation hospital in Newport News. These employees will have been transferred to the new facility in York County.

Some areas of expertise include caring for patients with brain injuries, stroke, spinal cord injuries, neurological diseases, amputation and other orthopedic conditions.

The hospital will be led by interdisciplinary treatment teams, which will include a physiatrist, a physician board certified in physical medicine, rehabilitation nurses, physical, occupational and recreation therapists, speech language pathologists, neuropsychologists, dietitians, case managers and other support staff, according to the news release.

“This leading-edge rehabilitative environment, coupled with its clinical expertise and highly-certified team, sets the stage to deliver the most advanced rehabilitative care and treatment available in the county,” Ruskan said.

This is the fourth Riverside health facility to open in York County, including MD Express Yorktown, Patriot Primary Care, Kiln Creek Primary Care and Home Health & Hospice services.
