A former member of the Williamsburg Planning Commission took a plea deal Wednesday, reducing a felony maiming charge to misdemeanor assault in connection with a domestic incident involving his wife.

Demetrios Florakis, 52, was convicted of misdemeanor assault and battery of a family member Wednesday in the Williamsburg-James City County Circuit Court, according to online court records.

Florakis was originally charged with felony maiming, but the charge was reduced to the misdemeanor as part of a plea deal.

He was sentenced to 12 months in jail with all time suspended, and will be on supervised probation for five years. He was not fined, but paid $252 in court costs.

Court records show Florakis was accused of running over his estranged wife with a car during a public altercation near the intersection of Harrison Avenue and Richmond Road Oct. 1, 2018. Police said her leg was broken during the incident.

Florakis told police he did not know he ran over his wife’s leg until he got out of the car moments later.

The criminal complaint filed in the case says the couple has an “extensive history of domestic incidents” and contact with Williamsburg Police.

Both Florakis and his wife were charged with domestic assault following the altercation, but she was found not guilty on her charge during a court hearing in November.

Florakis also appeared in court in November, where he was convicted of misdemeanor assault and battery of a family member.

That charge was appealed to the circuit court, and was subsequently dropped Wednesday after Florakis entered the plea deal for the felony maiming charge.

Florakis is a former chairman and member of the Williamsburg Planning Commission. He resigned from the position in May 2017 after he was charged with domestic assault in connection with another incident involving his wife.
