VIRGINIA BEACH — Rubin Carroll Slade Jr. was 24 years old when he raped two women in Virginia Beach in 1984.

Slade, 58, was sentenced Monday to serve two concurrent life terms for two counts of rape He pleaded guilty to the crimes on Feb. 5, according to the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.

The first rape happened on Sept. 26, 1984 – Slade sneaked into a woman’s Kentucky Avenue bedroom through an unlocked window in the middle of the night. He put his hand over her mouth and told her not to scream before raping her, according to court documents.

On Oct. 12, 1984, a woman drove to a convenience store at 17th Street and Pacific Avenue shortly after getting off work.

The woman parked her car and went into the store around 10:15 p.m. On her way in she noticed a man, later identified as Slade, standing outside, according to court documents.

She stayed in the store a bit before getting back in her car. She drove about two blocks when Slade jumped out of the back seat.

He made her drive down a dead end on 24th Street, where he forced her into the back seat and raped her. Afterward, he had her drop him off near 15th Street and Pacific Avenue.

Both women had rape kits done at the hospital, but technology in the 1980s was limited and DNA testing was not readily available.

The cases went cold for several years.

In 2014, the “seminal fluid” found in the rape kits was sent to Department of Forensic Science Tidewater Library, and the DNA from the samples matched that of Slade.

Slade has a lengthy criminal record dating back to 1980 – he is currently serving two life sentences for robbery and use of a firearm (bank robbery). He also has prior convictions for robbery, five counts of burglary, three counts of grand larceny, shoplifting and probation violation.
