Yorktown beach has been ranked among Virginia’s top beaches.

A USA Today readers’ choice poll ranked Yorktown Beach the second-best beach in Virginia, only getting beaten out by Colonial Beach on the Potomac River.

The Americans with Disabilities Act-accessible beach has a Mobi-Mat, special chairs for wheelchair-bound visitors and views of the Coleman bridge to Gloucester County.

With our beach and nearby picnic area, fishing pier, restaurants, shops and Riverwalk – all surrounded by American history – we think a stop at Yorktown beach can be fun for everyone,” York County spokeswoman Gail Whittaker said Wednesday.

Other beaches ranked in Virginia’s top 10 include Assateague Beach on Chincoteague Island, the Virginia Beach boardwalk, Bethel Beach Natural Area Preserve in Mathews County and Buckroe Beach in Hampton.

The state’s top 20 beaches were chosen by USA Today’s 10Best editors, “local experts” and Dr. Stephen Leatherman, an ecologist and professor who is the director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University.

From there, USA Today let its readers make the final ranking.

Virginia is for beach lovers, and we want to know your favorite, so we asked readers to vote for the best Virginia beach,” USA Today said.
