A woman who walked onto Hampton Highway in the early morning hours Sunday was killed by a car, police said.

Virginia State Police responded to the 200 block of Hampton Highway – north of its intersection with Victory Boulevard – for a crash involving a pedestrian.

Sara Beth Reissig, a 28-year-old from Newport News, was found with life-threatening injuries. She was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center, where she later died.

Police said Reissig, who was intoxicated, walked into the southbound lanes of Hampton Highway and was struck by a 2002 Chevrolet Impala.
