People in James City County and Williamsburg can expect to hear a siren throughout the area on Wednesday.

The Surry Power Station will test its emergency notification system around 11:10 a.m., according to the Virginia State Emergency Communications Committee.

The siren will be activated for three minutes.

The power station has 61 siren locations within a 10-mile radius of the station. The sirens are activated by a dispatcher from either James City County or Surry County.

Although Wednesday’s siren will only be a test, there is a way to tell if the siren is activated for a real emergency situation.

In a real emergency, the siren will sound for four separate, three-minute intervals. There will be a one-minute pause between each activation, according to the emergency communications committee.
