A 35-year-old Williamsburg woman who was arrested Wednesday for assaulting a police officer also faces marijuana possession charges, all stemming from a complaint about her dogs.
According to Maj. Greg Riley, a spokesman for the Williamsburg Police Department, at roughly 12:45 p.m., a plainclothes officer responded to the 500 block of Dunning Street, where a resident said she had been threatened by a neighbor who had released her dogs.
The officer restrained one of the dogs and approached a woman, Meghan Brook Brumgard, who said she was its owner. When uniformed officers arrived, Brumgard became upset. She also seemed to be intoxicated or in need of mental health treatment, according to the police.
When the officers heard a baby crying, Brumgard agreed to let the plainclothes officer follow her inside. An infant was lying on a couch and narcotics and a gun were on the living room table.
The police detained Brumgard, who kicked a uniformed officer. Brumgard was arrested for assault, taken to Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail and charged with marijuana possession and assaulting a law enforcement officer.
Williamsburg Human Services took custody of the infant until his father could be found.
The second dog was located on Alice Street, where it had gone into a chicken coop and killed a chicken. The dog’s owner, who is the child’s father, surrendered the dog to animal control.
