The Williamsburg Area Transit Authority, in conjunction with the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, is celebrating Try Transit Week starting today.
This annual statewide event encourages Virginia workers to consider different means of transportation for their daily commutes.
High population areas such as Northern Virginia, Richmond and Hampton Roads have particular problems with heavy traffic and congestion, according to a news release from VDRP.
Alternative forms of transit such as riding the bus have numerous benefits, including improving traffic congestion, helping the environment and allowing commuters to save money on gas and car maintenance.
Bus riders also have the ability to enjoy reading, working, browsing on their phones or listening to music during their commute, rather than having to maintain the focus and concentration necessary to drive.
Locals who pledge to use the WATA buses and/or the Williamsburg Trolley to commute during Try Transit Week can submit their pledge to DRPT’s website and be entered in a drawing to win two round-trip tickets for Amtrak Northeast Regional, or tickets for the transit service of their choice, including a 30-day “goWATA” pass.
Additionally, Great American Cookies of Williamsburg and Sweet Frog of Williamsburg are showing their support for public transit by offering discounts to WATA riders with a valid WATA pass during Try Transit Week.
