James City County is accepting submissions for the county’s first holiday tree ornament contest for the Governor’s Executive Mansion in Richmond.
The 2015 Holiday Tree at the Governor’s Executive Mansion will feature a theme of “Celebrating Virginia’ Localities.”
As such, Virginia’s 95 counties, 38 cities and 191 towns are being given the opportunity to be represented on the tree, which is displayed in the mansion’s ballroom.
James City County is asking citizens to create hand-crafted ornaments to submit to the county for judging. The winning submission will be sent to the Governor’s Executive Mansion and will represent the county.
“[The ornaments] need to represent James City County, whether it is through historical events, historic persons or any landmark that is typical for James City County,” said Ania Eckhardt, the county’s administrative and FOIA coordinator.
Ornaments, which have to be hand-crafted and not purchased, must be no larger than 6 inches and can be constructed out of any material, including wood, glass, metal and ceramic.
James City County is accepting submissions until Sept. 30 when a panel of five that includes members of the Board of Representatives will narrow down submissions.
Once the final group of ornaments is chosen by the panel, a public vote will be held from Oct. 5 to 16 to choose the winner, which will be announced Oct. 20.
All entries must be submitted through email in the form of a photograph that clearly shows the ornament, which must be constructed by adults 18 and older.
The City of Williamsburg is working to have an ornament submitted to the Governor’s Executive Mansion while York County will be sending an ornament crafted by members of the Senior Center of York.
