The funeral for the two people killed in a plane crash near the Williamsburg-Jamestown Airport last week is set for Friday.

A service for Air Force Maj. Gen. Joseph D. Brown IV and his wife, Susan Stanger Brown, is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Williamsburg Community Chapel. Both will be buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery on South Henry Street.

Nelsen Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

The Browns and their family dog died Friday after their single-engine Cessna 210 crashed in Williamsburg Landing, just feet away from a home. No one on the ground was injured.

The cause of the crash remains unknown as authorities from the Virginia State Police and National Transportation Safety Board continue their investigation into what caused the plane to crash.

Joseph Brown was the Commandant at the Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy at Washington, D.C.’s National Defense University at Fort Lesley J. McNair. That posting was the last in a distinguished career that saw Joseph Brown log more than 4,300 hours in aircraft such as the T-37, T-38, E-3, KC-135, E-6B, B-52 and B-1.

He was a celebrated pilot who flew combat missions in operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom. During his career, he picked up a Bronze Star, an Aerial Achievement Medal and a Distinguished Flying Cross with “V” device.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Joe Brown and his wife, Sue. Our thoughts and prayers are with their family, friends, and the members of the National Defense University as they come to terms with the tragedy,” said Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen Mark A. Welsh III in a written statement. “Joe and Sue dedicated their lives in service to our nation and their loss will be felt across our Air Force and joint team.”

WYDaily profiled Joseph Brown in November 2012 when he spoke to two third-grade classes of Walsingham Academy, of which he is an alumnus. You can read more about that visit here.
