A new pediatric dental business has opened in upper York County, setting up shop in Michael Commons on Bulifants Boulevard.

Pediatric Dental Specialists of Williamsburg is a full-service operation, offering everything from basic hygiene services to sedation and anesthesia, said Rana Graham-Montaque, the owner and dentist on site.

Graham-Montaque said the closest pediatric dental operations that offer the breadth of services available at her new business are in Richmond and Newport News.

“I’m thrilled to have a quality professional locate in Michael Commons,” said Jim Noel, director of York County’s Office of Economic Development. “It appears that they are addressing a needed medical niche, and we’re happy to have them in the county.”

Noel said that when Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center opened, it was the hope of the county that more healthcare-related businesses and professionals would locate to the area.

The business has a television system that places it in the company of other modern dental operations — there is a large television in the waiting area, flanked by movie theater-style draping and custom raised steps built into the floor where children can sit as they wait for their appointment.

The same movie that’s playing on the television in the lobby is screened on televisions in the hygiene area where they get their teeth cleaned and the operation area. The movies range from Rapunzel to Toy Story and everything in between.

“They’re very excited about a space that’s designed just for them,” Graham-Montaque said. “To actually have the specialty service in York County, they’re very enthusiastic. From 1-year-olds all the way up to 17- or 18-year-olds, they want to have a seat in the theater.”

The office has a jungle safari theme. Elephants, zebras, lions and other animals are represented in artwork throughout the business. There is also a 150-gallon fish tank that will soon be installed.

In the future, Graham-Montaque said she would like to bring in a second dentist to better use the 3,800 square feet of space at the new business. Pediatric Dental Specialists of Williamsburg is able to offer all the pediatric services that are available at Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Dentistry.

Graham-Montaque said she wants to work more with special needs patients, as a big part of pediatric dentistry is catering to people with special needs from all age ranges.

“One of my big focuses right now is trying to figure out how to tap into that group of patients and figure out where they get their resources from,” she said.

Graham-Montaque is the former Dental Director at the Daily Planet Healthcare for the Homeless in Richmond. She also started a public health dental clinic for Central Virginia Health Services in Fredricksburg. Returning to the Historic Triangle is a positive for the West Point native, who said she is excited to be back near her home.
