Expect Delays This Weekend on Route 17 James River Bridge

Drivers should anticipate delays in both directions on the Route 17 James River Bridge this weekend as crews resume grid deck replacement work.

The grid work will take place on the northbound span of the bridge. A single lane will be closed for both north- and southbound traffic beginning Friday at 9 p.m. This will continue until Monday at 5 a.m., according to a press release from the Virginia Department of Transportation.

During this time, crews will work to replace 30 panels on the bridge span grid deck. A future weekend lane closure will be required to complete all of the work—this is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 14 at 9 p.m. to Monday, Dec. 17 at 5 a.m.

Other work taking place includes four bridge lifts to confirm the functionality of counterweights on the bridge lift mechanism, according to the press release. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the Route 17 area near the bridge during the scheduled work. The Interstate 664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel is an alternate route.
