NEWPORT NEWS — Prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at Christopher Newport University collected over 6,000 pounds of food to donate to the Virginia Food Bank.

Student-athletes from all 24 varsity sports at Christopher Newport helped collect three tons of food for the annual charity drive. In total, the Captains were able to collect 1,700 food items while raising over $1,650 in monetary donations, equating to over 6,000 pounds of food donations.

The Captains have donated well over 50,000 lbs to the annual charity drive since joining the league in 2013-14. The initiative was started as the CAC Challenge, started by the University of Mary Washington SAAC leadership in a challenge to the other conference members at the organization’s Fall 2010 conference meeting. As a part of the challenge, each participating school can pick any 10-day period between October 1 and Thanksgiving day to collect food for a local charity.
