The region remains at-risk for fast-spreading fires through Friday afternoon.

The National Weather Service advises residents to be careful when handling flammable objects, such as matches, cigarettes and machinery. All smoking materials should be disposed of safely.

A combination of gusty southwest winds and low humidity leads to an increased chance of fire. Any dry objects that do ignite, such as grass, will have the potential to spread quickly.

All of southeastern Virginia was listed as at-risk for fire by the NWS Friday.

Open burning is illegal in Virginia through April 30.
