JAMES CITY COUNTY — James City County announced Thursday morning that the underground fire at the stormwater detention facility in the back parking lot at Williamsburg Premium Outlets has been extinguished.
Working together with the contractor hired by the property owner, crews from the James City County Fire Department and the City of Newport News Fire Department successfully extinguished the fire, which had burned for more than 100 hours, at approximately 10 p.m., the county said, and smoky conditions have dissipated.
All fire crews have cleared the scene.
The fire department had been notified at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23, of the underground fire in the auxiliary parking lot located behind the shops.
When units arrived they discovered the partially collapsed parking lot and an active fire in the underground stormwater detention facility.
Firefighters, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Office of Pollution Response and the Environmental Protection Agency remained on the scene throughout the course of the fire, and the air monitored and water sampled to ensure the public’s safety.
