NEWPORT NEWS — Christopher Newport University sophomore kicker Maxx Lawton was honored Monday by the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). Lawton, from Midlothian, Va., was selected the Special Teams Player of the Week by the league office.
Lawton connected on two field goals and also booted three extra points to account for nine points in CNU’s 33-10 victory Saturday at Montclair State University. He opened the scoring in both halves of the game by kicking a 35-yard field goal in the first quarter, and later a 34-yard effort in the third quarter.
He becomes the fourth CNU player honored this year by the NJAC. Sophomore running back Jordin Lennon was named the Offensive Player of the Week last week, and earlier this season freshman defensive back Terrence Lamb was tabbed the Defensive Rookie of the Week, and freshman wide receiver Josh Powell was selected the Offensive Rookie of the Week.
The Captains have now won four straight games and are 6-3 overall and 4-1 in the NJAC. CNU completes the schedule on Friday night, hosting the College of New Jersey at TowneBank Stadium in a 6:00 p.m. kickoff. Friday night will be Senior Night as the Captains honor their senior members before kickoff.
