VIRGINIA BEACH — The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame is now accepting nominations for its 2024 Steve Guback Sportsperson of the Year Award.
According to the organization, the award is named in honor of Guback, a 2005 Virginia Sports Hall of Fame inductee, and recognizes an athlete, coach, team, administrator and/or individual who supports athletics, and who has distinguished themselves through outstanding athletic achievement during the 2024 calendar year.
The award was created in 2023 and first presented at the 2024 Induction to the Norfolk Tides AAA Baseball Club for their outstanding achievements in 2023.
The Hall of Fame is accepting nominations from Nov. 1 through Dec. 31, and anyone can nominate a deserving individual or team.
The nomination criteria are as follows:
- The nominee is a resident of Virginia and/or their athletic achievement has a strong connection to Virginia.
- Athletic achievement must have taken place between Jan. 1 – Dec. 31.
- Nominee clearly demonstrates sportsmanship, defined as behavior exhibited before, during or after competition based on values, respect of the game and its participants.
- Nominee positively affects a community’s sports culture and represents themselves and/or their athletic organization with integrity.
Nominations can be completed online via a form available on the Hall’s website, or mailed directly to the Hall of Fame office. Once all nominations are received the winner will be selected through a vote combining the Hall’s Board of Directors, and the public, with the winner of the public vote counting as one vote in the final tally.
This year’s winner will be honored at the annual Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Induction ceremony on Saturday, April 26 in Virginia Beach.
