Virginia State Police Trooper Injured After Vehicle Struck on I-64 in York County

(Virginia State Police)

YORK COUNTY — A Virginia State Police trooper was injured early Wednesday morning after his vehicle was struck by a car during a traffic stop on Interstate 64.

At approximately 3:13 a.m on Oct. 16, a State Trooper notified the emergency communications center he had been struck by another vehicle on Interstate 64 at mile marker 236 and that he was injured as a result of that crash, Virginia State Police (VSP) said.

According to state police, Trooper B. Nicholson was stopped on the closed shoulder of the interstate and had just completed a traffic stop on another vehicle.  Nicholson returned and entered his 2021 marked Ford Explorer, when he was struck and sideswiped by a 2000 Ford Contour, driven by 63-year-old Johnnie Ray Davis of Harbor Hills Drive in Hayes. The state vehicle had all the emergency equipment activated and properly functioning, VSP said.

Davis was not impaired at the time of the crash, and state police said speed was not a contributing factor.

Davis was charged with reckless driving at the scene, VSP said. Trooper Nicholson sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center.
