YORKTOWN — A bus aid at Mt. Vernon Elementary School in Yorktown was arrested Tuesday for assaulting a 6-year-old student with disabilities.

According to the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, on Oct. 1, 2024, it received information from school administration that a York County School Division (YCSD) employee had assaulted the 6-year-old on a school bus. The employee, who is no longer employed by the York County School Division, was a school bus aide employed to assist with special needs children on the school bus.

The assault occurred when the school bus arrived at Mt. Vernon Elementary School, the sheriff’s office said, and the children were departing the bus to enter the school. The aide dragged the 6-year-old down the aisle from the rear of the bus and shoved the child off the bus to a teacher who was waiting to take the child to class, officials said.

The school bus aide, 75-year-old Cynthia Diana Greasley of Yorktown, was arrested and charged with assault and battery.

“On Tuesday, Oct. 1, Mt. Vernon Elementary School administrators notified the School Board Office of an allegation of unprofessional conduct by a bus aide involving a student with disabilities,” the school division said in a post on Facebook. “We took immediate action, launching an internal investigation and notifying the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office. As a result of these investigations, the individual has been charged with assault and battery and is no longer employed by the York County School Division.”
“The safety and well-being of our students is always our top priority. Our hiring procedures involve mandatory and thorough background checks and fingerprint clearance,” it added. “Additionally, YCSD employees participate in training designed to equip them with the skills necessary for managing student behavior in a safe and supportive manner. When there is a question of safety or misconduct, we immediately investigate and take appropriate actions.”
