The Colonial K9 Classic Comes to Jamestown Beach Event Park

JAMESTOWN — This weekend, Jamestown Beach Event Park is hosting the Colonial K9 Classic.

The event, which began on Friday, Sept 13, continues on Saturday, Sept. 14 from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. and again on Sunday, Sept. 15, from 9 a.m. until the division final starting at 3 p.m.

Free to attend, the community is invited to come out and watch the competition, and enjoy vendors, food trucks and a beer garden.

There will also be live demonstrations from dog trainers, drone camera photography and police K9s showing off their talents.

The event, hosted by Chesapeake Dock Dogs and Muddy Marley’s Dog Wash, showcases dogs who love jumping, flying, splashing, and competing in dock jumping.

According to DockDogs, competitions taking place at Jamestown include:

  • Big Air The original and most popular. Each dog and their “handler” are a competition team and each team competes head‐to‐head against other teams to see who can jump the farthest distance. A judge evaluates all jumps electronically using digital video stop‐action technology. The dog that jumps the farthest takes home the prize.
  • Extreme Vertical — The equivalent to a high jump for dogs. This competition allows each team to use a maximum of 20 feet of the dock surface and is allotted 60 seconds to jump in the air while attempting to remove the “bumper” from the Extender Arm.
  • Speed Retrieve — The newest form of DockDogs competition, each team is allowed to use a maximum of 20 feet of the dock surface and is allotted 60 seconds to get into the water. However, instead of measuring distance or height, each dog is racing against the clock. Upon entering the water, each dog must swim to the end of a 40-foot pool and remove the DockDogs designated object from a modified extender arm in order to complete their timed run.

“Come on out,” encourages Rebecca Mulvain, owner of Muddy Marley’s Dog Wash. “This is a great outdoor activity for the whole family to enjoy, including your dogs!”
