The WISC Prides Itself on Being a Safe Space, ‘One-Stop Shop’

WILLIAMSBURG — On the fields at Warhill Sports Complex, the Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex (WISC) was a dream started 24 years ago by Chris Haywood and Chris Scrofani.

In 2000, Haywood and Scrofani, along with Amy West, opened the WISC as an indoor soccer and inline hockey facility. The original facility was 55,000 square feet and housed two turf fields, a fitness center and CrossFit area.

After renovations in 2005 and 2014, the WISC has expanded its program opportunities to include something for everyone, no matter the age, including pickleball courts, multiple gyms, a preschool, a gymnastics facility, a yoga studio, various sports offices and more.

Scrofani knows that the WISC is successful in large part due to community support.

“The reason that we are so successful is because of the community. We really try to serve the community and they are the reason we are still here 24 years later. We try to be a facility that can truly serve the community because the more they utilize the facility, the more programs we can continue to add,” Scrofani said.

The WISC offers a Kids Club for ages 2 to 12, operating a preschool, before and after-school care program, and summer camp for both preschoolers and children. A perk, according to Scrofani, is that the WISC’s location allows for staff to drop off and pick up kids from sports practices taking place at the Warhill Sports Complex fields.

“The nice thing about our kids club is that they start in our preschool and then after they graduate from our preschool, they head to their individual elementary school and they go into our before and after school program. One of the biggest pluses with it is that we have the ability to bring them to and pick them up from their sports programs. As long as it’s before six, we can escort those kids to their respective programs. After six, it’s the responsibility of the parent to pick them up, but we can alleviate a lot of stress on families by offering that service,” Scrofani said.

From performance training to physical therapy, nutrition and more, the WISC can accommodate the entire athlete.

“There are standalone gyms and yoga studios all around the area, but there is not a facility where you can do all of these different things in one, except for us. We pride ourselves on being a one-stop shop,” Scrofani said.

The WISC has also opened its doors to lease agreements. Many local teams call the WISC home base, including Virginia Elite Gymnastics Academy (VEGA), the Williamsburg Wrestling Club, The Academy of Dance and Gymnastics, Riverside Physical Therapy and more.

“We have the facility and those organizations are all the experts in those sports. They can make those sports the best they can be and we can provide a place for them, so in our book, it’s a win-win for the community,” Scrofani said.

A hidden gem, tucked into the corner on the second floor of the WISC, is the ninja course. With a concept similar to the American Ninja Warrior television series, WISC members can challenge their bodies through various obstacles and challenges.

Membership at the WISC is offered at both individual and family rates. All memberships include unlimited access to the self-guided gym, pickleball courts, and the indoor playground.

“Members also get discounts on any programs that we offer. Instead of paying the regular price for a program, you can get a discount for being a member. Even with some of the lease agreements that we have, those businesses will also offer discounts to our WISC members,” Scrofani explained.

Basic individual memberships start at $30 and basic family memberships start at $50. There are also WISC member rates for birthday parties.

With the WISC celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2025, Scrofani hopes to continue to grow by adding more programs and sports to the facility. At its core, however, Scrofani hopes to continue to provide a positive and safe space for the community.

“Truly, at the heart of what we do, we are a place for our community members to feel safe. We’ve always had a Field of Dreams mindset of ‘if you build it, they will come’ and there truly is nothing farther from the truth. We built it, we worked our tail off, and we’ve had people come,” Scrofani said.
