CONWAY, S.C. — The No. 13/14 William & Mary football team opened its road slate with a 40-21 setback at Coastal Carolina on Saturday evening.
The Tribe (1-1) outscored Coastal (2-0) in the second half but was unable to overcome a 27-7 halftime deficit.
CCU jumped out to a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter with touchdowns on each of its first three possessions before W&M got on the scoreboard with a 62-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Darius Wilson to wideout DreSean Kendrick.
Coastal extended margin to 30 early in the second half, 37-7, before the Tribe found the end zone again with a 19-yard scamper by Wilson with 6:12 remaining in the third quarter.
W&M added its final score with a 4-yard touchdown run by quarterback Tyler Hughes in the contest’s final seconds.
The Tribe held CCU without any offensive touchdowns following the Chants’ opening three possessions, as they kicked three field goals and posted a defensive score.
W&M outgained Coastal in the second half, 166-115, after the Chants piled up 341 yards in the opening 30 minutes.
Tribe Standouts
Wilson completed 11-of-21 passes for 165 yards with a touchdown, while he rushed for 22 yards with a score.
Hughes was the Tribe’s leading rusher with 54 yards on six carries with a touchdown, while Kendrick posted a team-high 74 receiving yards on two catches to go with his score.
Linebacker Quinn Osborne and cornerback Jalen Jones both totaled a team-high eight tackles.
Inside the Numbers
CCU outgained W&M, 456-319, which included a 277-142 advantage on the ground.
W&M’s defense held CCU to just 2 of 11 on third down.
The Tribe had nearly as many first downs as CCU (19-23), while the Chants owned a narrow edge in time of possession (30:19-29:41).
W&M scored touchdowns with both its trips into the red zone and converted both its fourth down attempts.
The Opposition
Coastal running back Christian Washington rushed for 100 yards on 16 carries with two touchdowns, while quarterback Ethan Vasko completed 8-of-23 passes for 160 yards and rushed for 59 yards on six carries.
Defensively, Jaun Powell totaled a team-high six tackles with a TFL and a PBU, while Joah Cash and Tray Brown both posted sacks.
