HISTORIC TRIANGLE — It’s time for the human kiddos to head back to school. While that can be an exciting time for them, it can be stressful for our furry family members.
Ferris has a few tips to make the transition a bit easier for everyone.
Each fall, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) sees an increase in back-to-school related pet poisonings. One of the most common issues involves dogs getting into kids’ backpacks and lunchboxes.
It is recommended that you have a designated area to keep backpacks up and off the floor so that your pet is not able to access what is inside. Dogs, like Ferris, love to follow their noses and become quite curious. Commonly found school items such as pencils, ink pens and glue can all be a danger to your canine.
Lunchboxes can also pose a risk and should also be put away. Common snacks such as grapes, raisins, sugar-free gum and nuts can make your pet ill. There is also the risk of choking hazards, such as plastic wrappers.
Rushing in and out of doors means the opportunity for your pet to escape the home. The last thing this pet parent wants is to have to chase down Ferris who is chasing after a school bus on a busy morning. If you have a pet that may make a run for it, consider putting them in a safe, enclosed area during bus pickups and drop-offs.
Understand that your pets may have had an entire summer to spend with the family. When school is back in session, many dogs develop separation anxiety. Carving out some extra time for a family walk or backyard playtime can help your pup adjust to a new schedule and help them cope.
If your pup is home alone more often, consider hiring a pet sitter to break up your pet’s day with some company. Help your pet avoid stress and learn to be comfortable while they are alone. Create a safe space for your dog to rest, provide a favorite toy, and try giving them a food puzzle toy to concentrate on as you depart.
