NEWPORT NEWS — The Hampton Roads Achievement in Community Theater Awards announced the winners for its 2023-24 season on Aug. 15 at its inaugural ceremony at the Ferguson Center at Christopher Newport University (CNU).

Tara Wheeler hosted the ceremony, which included encore performances of five favorite numbers from the community theaters from the season and trophy presentations from Mayor Phillip Jones of Newport News, Bruce Bronstein of CNU, and six different area community theaters.

“We are excited to recognize some of the extraordinary performances in our Hampton Roads community theater scene from this past year,” said HRACT Awards producer Michael Yankoski. “Community theater brings such varied stories to our area, and does so in an accessible fashion. It is an essential part of our thriving arts community.”

Winners included the Little Theatre of Virginia Beach taking home the “ACT-y” for Best Season Series, Smithfield Little Theatre’s rendition of “Sound of Music” winning four awards including Best Musical, and Generic Theater’s performance of “Indecent” getting trophies for three categories including Best Play.

Williamsburg Players won the Best Choreography category, with Garret Roberts bringing home the award for Little Shop of Horrors.

The Hampton Roads Achievement in Community Theater Awards, or the “ACTys” for short, are organized and put on by a small group of locals who love community theater and want to see it grow and thrive in the Hampton Roads area.
