York County Public Library to Host Series of Events for National Recovery Month

YORK COUNTY — York County Public Library has announced a series of events in recognition of National Recovery Month this September.

The events will take place throughout the month and are designed to foster awareness, promote understanding, and provide valuable resources related to recovery from addiction and mental health challenges, according to York County Public Affairs.

“National Recovery Month is a time to celebrate the progress made by individuals in recovery and to highlight the importance of support systems in sustaining recovery. This year, York County Public Library is honored to contribute to these efforts with a diverse lineup of events that cater to various interests and needs within our community,” the county said.

Highlights include:

Recovery Resource Fair
Date: Saturday, Sept. 7
Time: 1:30-3:30 p.m.
Location: Yorktown Library Meeting Room

York County Public Library and the Historic Triangle Drug Prevention Coalition are hosting a Recovery Resource Fair that features nine addiction and recovery organizations. Those organizations include: Iron Bridge Recovery Center, Faith Recovery, Riverside Mental Health and Recovery Center, VA Attorney General’s Office, Farley Center, SpiritWorks, Pinnacle Treatment, Groups Recover Together, and Colonial Behavioral Health. The event is free and open to the community. There is no registration — drop in at any point during the event to get information for yourself, a loved one, or your organization. Light refreshments will be provided.

Dangers of Drugs Talk
Dates: Monday, Sept. 9; Thursday, Sept. 12
Times: 6:15-7:45 p.m.
Locations: Sept. 9 in the Yorktown Library Meeting Room; Sept. 12 in the Tabb Library Meeting Room

Join Deputy Kevin Taylor, Crime Prevention Specialist and Law Enforcement Practitioner for York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, for an informative class on the dangers of drugs and how this can affect teens. Deputy Taylor will provide education on the choices that teens may be faced with and how to overcome peer pressure. This class is geared towards teens and their parents. Questions are encouraged both during and after the presentation.

The Invitation to Change Method: Supporting Family Who Are Dealing with Addiction
Date: Saturday, Sept. 14
Time: 10:30 a.m.-noon
Location: Yorktown Library Meeting Room

Rev. Jan Brown, on behalf of SpiritWorks Foundation, presents an informative talk titled “Introducing the Invitation to Change: A Compassionate Approach to Supporting Parents and Family Members Who are Dealing with a Loved One’s Addiction.” As parents and caregivers, supporting a child through substance use challenges can feel overwhelming and isolating. Traditional approaches often rely on confrontation and ultimatums, leaving both the child and the family feeling frustrated and disconnected. In this introductory session, we will explore the core principles of the Invitation to Change method and how it can transform the way you support your child on their journey to wellness.

An Evening with Beth Macy
Date: Saturday, Sept. 14
Time: 7-9 p.m.
Location: Yorktown Library Meeting Room

Bestselling author and journalist Beth Macy will focus on the opioid crisis in conjunction with her reporting and research for her books, “Dopesick” and “Raising Lazarus.” After her talk, there will be an audience Q&A period and then a book signing line. Independent bookseller Paperbacks Ink “All Booked Up” will be at the library selling copies of Ms. Macy’s books. Registration is open and is required to attend this event.
