York County Announces Street Closures, Traffic Alerts for Yorktown July Fourth Festivities

(York County Public Affairs)

YORKTOWN — Due to anticipated July Fourth crowds, several temporary traffic patterns, street closures and blockades will be in effect in Historic Yorktown, the county announced.

Closed All Day to Vehicle Traffic:

  • Zweybrucken Road
  • Comte de Grasse Street
  • Main Street (from Zweybrucken to Ballard)
  • Beach Picnic Area (located at the corner of Water and Comte de Grasse Streets)
  • Nelson, Smith, and Bacon Streets (restricted to residents only)
  • Water Street (from Comte de Grasse to Read Streets)
  • Ambler Street

Closed for Parade:

  • 8:45–10 a.m. — Water Street from Read to Mathews Street
  • 8:45–10 a.m. — Ballard Street from Water Street to Alexander Hamilton Boulevard

Additionally, from 8:45–10 a.m., all traffic arriving from Alexander Hamilton Boulevard via George Washington Memorial Highway (Route 17) will be re-routed to the right onto Ballard Street.

The county notes free parking will be available during the day at York Hall, York-Poquoson Courthouse, County Administration Building, Riverwalk Landing parking terrace, the National Park Service Battlefield Visitor Center, and other designated public parking lots throughout town, and the air-conditioned, handicap-accessible Yorktown Trolley will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the day with a modified route. Visitors can track the Yorktown Trolley in real time along the July 4 route on the free ETA SPOT app.

Evening Activities

Beginning at 4 p.m., the county said visitors attending evening activities must park on the Yorktown Battlefield at the corner of Cook Road and Ballard Street, which can be accessed via Cook Road. The distance from the Battlefield parking area to the waterfront is approximately one mile with a portion over uneven terrain.

The Battlefield will close to the public at 8:30 p.m., or once the battlefield reaches capacity. This includes visitors attempting to access the town via Goosley Road, Old Williamsburg Road, and Mathews Street (by way of George Washington Memorial Highway).

Those who are not Yorktown Village residents, business owners, or have an official pass will not be permitted to park in Historic Yorktown.

The county reminds visitors that the Colonial Parkway leading into Yorktown is closed for maintenance.

Handicapped Parking and Special Assistance:

Transportation will be provided from Yorktown Middle School from 4 to 7 p.m. for those with disabilities and special needs, as well as one designated escort — a friend, family member, caregiver, etc. Those visitors must be on-site and checked in by 7 p.m. to catch the transport to the waterfront.

Both passengers will be issued passes and must have them to return on the shuttle at the end of the evening. Drop-off will be at the Yorktown Waterfront, approximately 200 yards from the performance area. The shuttle will make return runs from the Yorktown Waterfront to Yorktown Middle School from 9:45–10:30 p.m.

Once the shuttle parks at Riverwalk Landing, from 7:30 to 9:45 p.m., it will not make runs until after the fireworks show. Due to limited shuttle capacity, the county aska all other individuals in the party to drive a separate vehicle to Yorktown and park at the Battlefield.

Other Important Notes:

Barbecue grills are limited to the National Park Service Beach Picnic Area with designated areas for the disposal of hot coals. All alcoholic beverages are prohibited.
