WILLIAMSBURG — Williamsburg Area Transit Authority (WATA) announced an increase in services Wednesday, some to pre-pandemic levels.
“WATA is excited to bring back these services to help people in their daily lives,” said Matthew Scalia, Executive Director of WATA. “We are committed to providing convenient and reliable service, and this is a big step in that direction. We appreciate the community’s patience and support as we built back from the effects of the pandemic.”
In March 2020, WATA temporarily limited its fixed-route service by reducing peak hour frequency as well as limiting Sunday’s service hours in response to the emergency declaration made by then-Gov. Ralph Northam.
Due to a shortage of bus operators, reinstating those service levels had not been possible until now, it said.
Service changes include:
- Starting Sunday, May 5, service hours for all routes will extend from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
- Starting Monday, May 6, WATA will bring back 30-minute frequency during peak hours for Route 1: Lee Hall and Route 2: Richmond. This means service every half-hour from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. 60-minute frequency remains during the other periods.
