Ferris’ Day Off: Helping Raise Funds for Jamestown High PTSA

JAMES CITY COUNTY — That adorable little beagle mix with the ’80s-inspired name is back to showcase local businesses, educate and promote pet health and bring a smile to faces.

On Monday, April 15, Muddy Marley’s Dog Wash hosted a fundraiser to benefit Jamestown High School’s Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA), which has been raising funds for the PTSA trips and other student activities.

Students from the school volunteered their time, while Muddy Marley’s donated the space, expertise and all monies raised to the cause.

Ferris Bueller was invited by Rebecca Mulvain, owner of Muddy Marley’s Dog Wash, to stop by for a visit and hang out for a few hours. Little did he know … a wash and nail trim were also on the schedule.

Katey Howerton, PTSA Vice President of Fundraising said, “Becky (Mulvain) contacted me, as an alumni of Jamestown High, she wanted to partner with us. We thought this would be a fun way for students to get to know small businesses, interact with one another, a volunteer opportunity for our students, as well as support a small business of an alumni of Jamestown High School.”

Before beginning any interaction with the pups, the student volunteers received a lesson on how to properly care for, wash and deal with the dogs.

Muddy Marley’s Dog Wash staff also oversaw each session and monitored both dogs and volunteers.

The students were as excited and anxious as Ferris to be part of the evening.

“Every kid wants a dog but, they may not know what to do. So, this is a good experience for them and Becky teaches them so much,” said President of Jamestown High PTSA Adrianne Tropilo.

Both Lillian and Sarah, who bathed Ferris, said they love animals and that this was a great opportunity to hang out with dogs since neither currently have pets at home. They treated Ferris like royalty, doting on him and making sure he was comfortable through the entire process.

Jamestown High parent Greg Lee, who brought in his dog Jackson, said, “I am happy to support Jamestown High and the students. They have a lot of great programs and they don’t always get state funds, so this is a way to do that.”

Mulvain said she has seen such a positive outcome of the partnership between her business, students, parents and the community that she plans on hosting other fundraising dog washes for Jamestown High PTSA in the future.

As for Ferris, he strutted out of Muddy Marley’s with a fancy new bandana, smelling great and looking forward to his future adventures in the Historic Triangle.
