JAMES CITY COUNTY — A Newport News man is dead after a single-vehicle accident on Busch Service Road near the Kingsmill Woods Golf Course Wednesday.

According to police, at approximately 7:12 p.m. on March 27, the James City County Police and Fire Departments responded to a single-vehicle accident discovered by the Kingsmill Police Department.

The initial assessment determined that a 2009 Hyundai Sonata exited the roadway and crashed into a tree near the golf course. The lone occupant, 68-year-old Benjamin Baxter of Newport News, was unresponsive and was declared dead at the scene by James City County medics.

Police said it is currently unknown what caused the vehicle to exit the roadway, but initial findings indicate that alcohol was not a factor.

Busch Service Road was closed for approximately four hours, and the crash remains under investigation.
