NEWPORT NEWS — With just 16 teams remaining in the 64-team field, Christopher Newport University heads back into action Friday afternoon in the 2024 NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament.

The Captains are 23-6, and will play Williams College of Massachusetts in the Sectional being played at Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina. Tip-off is set for 4:15 p.m. at Ragan-Brown Field House on the Guilford campus.

Host Guilford College will then battle Keene State (NH) in the second game Friday night at 7:15, with the winners advancing to play Saturday night at 7:15 for the right to advance to the National Semifinals.

The Captains, defending National Champions, are coming off two victories last weekend in Chester, PA, in the Widener University Regional. John Krikorian‘s squad defeated Hobart College (NY) on Friday, 79-59, and then ousted host Widener on Saturday, 70-65, to advance to the round of 16.

Williams also won both games played last weekend in the Oswego (NY) Regional, as the Ephs eliminated DeSales University, on Friday, 77-51, and then took down host Oswego State Saturday, 79-77. Williams is now also 23-6 for the season.

The game will mark just the second meeting of the schools on the hardwood. The Captains and Ephs squared off in Clinton, NY, in the 2019 NCAA Tournament, and Christopher Newport captured the win, 79-70, to advance to the program’s second Final Four.

Christopher Newport is playing in its 27th NCAA Tournament, and reached the field this year for the eighth consecutive time. This marks the 11th time CNU has advanced to the round of 16, and the Captains are 5-5 all-time in “Sweet 16” games. John Krikorian‘s team has won the last three, and four of the last five, to advance to the round of eight. Krikorian, who has taken his team to the NCAA Tournament ten times in 13 seasons at CNU, is now 25-7 all-time in NCAA games.

Captains men’s basketball is broadcast live on the Christopher Newport/Pepsi Radio Network (Xtra 99.1 FM) with the pre-game show beginning at 3:50 p.m. Friday from the Ragan-Brown Field House in Greensboro. Video of all the action will be streamed live by host Guilford College and fans can also follow live stats, access the complete CNU game notes, visit the tournament central website, and view the updated bracket at
