YORK COUNTY — A 30-year-old man is dead after a single-vehicle crash on Goodwin Neck Road Friday afternoon.
According to Virginia State Police, troopers responded to the 3000 block of Goodwin Neck Road, north of Back Creek Park, to investigate the single-vehicle crash at approximately 4:27 p.m. on March 1.
Police said preliminary investigations have revealed that the driver, 30-year-old Aaron Eli Hoopingarner of the 100 block of Bradley Drive, Yorktown, was traveling northbound on Goodwin Neck Road when he attempted to pass two vehicles on the left, going northbound in the southbound lanes of traffic.
Hoopingarner then lost control of the vehicle, ran off the roadway and struck a traffic sign, police said. Attempting to regain control of the vehicle, he overcorrected and ran off the roadway a second time, striking a tree and dying upon impact. Hoopingarner was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to police, and was ejected from the vehicle.
Hoopingarner was the sole occupant of the vehicle, and speed was a contributing factor in the crash, police said. There was no indication that alcohol contributed to the crash.
