Elon Rallies Past William & Mary Men’s Basketball

ELON, N.C. — William & Mary shot 49.1% from the floor and knocked down 13 3-pointers on Thursday night, but Elon scored 14 of the game’s final 20 points to rally past the Tribe, 76-71, at the Schar Center.

Junior Gabe Dorsey led all scorers with 20 points on 6-of-11 from 3-point range, including a buzzer-beater to give W&M a 42-39 halftime lead. Caleb Dorsey added 12 points, six rebounds and three assists, while sophomore Chase Lowe turned in a strong stat line as well with 10 points, five rebounds and six assists.

Neither teams led by more than six points in the final 20 minutes. The Phoenix (13-17, 6-11 CAA) hit five straight free throws to take its first lead since the opening two minutes of the game on a pair of Zac Ervin free throws, 67-65, with 6:43 left.

After Matteus Case briefly tied the contest, Elon opened up its largest lead of the contest with five straight points. Sam Sherry scored four of those including a jumper in the paint at the 2:21 mark to give the home team a 72-67 lead.

Lowe founded Trey Moss and Caleb Dorsey for lay-ups on back-to-back W&M possessions to close the margin to one, 72-71 with 1:28 remaining.

After a stop on the defensive end, the Tribe (8-22, 3-14 CAA) had a chance to take the lead with 27 seconds remaining, but Caleb Dorsey’s jumper from the right side was off the mark. Elon’s Max Mackinnon hit four free throws in the final 24 seconds to put the game away.

W&M dished out 19 assists on its 26 made field goals, and knocked down double-digit 3-pointers for the 11th time this season. Elon shot 47.3% for the game and held a 36-29 advantage on the glass, including 14 offensive rebounds which it turned into 16 second-chance points.

T.K. Simpkins led Elon with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Nick Dorn had 14 on 4-of-10 from 3-point range. Mackinnon (13 points) and Sherry (10 points) rebounded out the double-digit scorers for the Phoenix.

The Tribe took the lead early behind a 14-2 run sparked by its 3-point shooting. Gabe Dorsey knocked down the final three triples of the run to give W&M a 16-7 advantage just five minutes into the contest.

Elon answered with six in a row, closing to within 18-15 on an Ervin jumper at the 13:24 mark.

Miles Hicks 3-pointer followed by a Lowe lay-up pushed the Tribe lead back to 25-17 with 11:02 left in the opening half.

The Tribe lead was again eight, 37-29, after a Lowe lay-up at the four-minute mark, but Elon pulled even behind a 10-2 run.

It looked as though the contest was headed to the half tied at 39 following two Simpkins free throws with 4.7 seconds remaining. But after an Elon foul, Gabe Dorsey hit a catch and shoot buzzer-beater with just 0.7 seconds left on the clock to give W&M a three-point halftime lead.

Simpkins scored Elon’s first seven in the second half, and the Phoenix pulled even at 49 on a Kendall Campbell free throw with 13:25 to play.

W&M responded with back-to-back 3’s from Gabe Dorsey and Hicks to take a 55-49 lead just 40 seconds later. A Mackinnon 3-pointer knotted the contest once again at 62 with 8:58 left.

Sean Houpt finished with nine points on a trio of 3-pointers, while freshman Tai Hamilton and Hicks added eight apiece off the bench.
