BOSTON, Mass. — Chase Lowe scored on a driving lay-up with 21.2 seconds left to lift William & Mary to a 72-68 win at Northeastern on Saturday afternoon in Matthews Arena.
The Huskies (8-13, 3-5 CAA) erased 10-point Tribe lead and pulled even at 68 on a Jared Turner 3-pointers with 29.3 seconds left. Lowe took the in-bounds pass and went the length of the floor for a lay-up to put the Tribe back in front.
On the ensuing defensive possession, the Tribe, which was playing with a five-guard lineup after both Tai Hamilton and Caleb Dorsey fouled out, forced the ball out of hands of the game’s top scorer Chris Doherty with a double team, and Masai Troutman’s 3-point attempt from the right wing was the off the mark. Sophomore Trey Moss skied for the defensive rebound, was fouled and hit two free throws to cement the Tribe road win.
W&M (8-13, 3-5 CAA) received a balanced scoring attack with five players scored in double figures. Junior Matteus Case, who made his first start in place of the injured Charlie Williams, led the Tribe with a career-high tying 15 points. Moss finished with 14 points and four rebounds, while Lowe added 13 points and team-highs of six rebounds and five assists. Caleb and Gabe Dorsey rounded out the double digit scorers with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Defensively, the Tribe limited NU to just 39.3% shooting and just 4-of-19 from 3. W&M finished the contest at 47.9% shooting, including 54.5% in the decisive second half. The Green and Gold connected on double-digit 3-pointers for the fourth time in the last five games, hitting 10-of-25 (40%). The Tribe also was an impressive 16-of-18 (88.9%) from the free throw line.
Northeastern kept things close behind a 42-23 advantage on the glass, including 19 offensive rebounds that led to 25 second chance points. Doherty led the Huskies with 27 points and 13 rebounds.
W&M started hot, hitting its first four shots from the floor. Five in a row from Case, including an fast-break and-1, gave W&M a 10-5 lead three minutes into the game.
The Huskies pulled even at 14 on a Turner 3-pointer at the 12:52 mark.
Following a Gabe Dorsey 3-pointer that put the Tribe back in front, Northeastern scored five straight to take it first lead, 25-23, on a Harold Woods fast-break lay-up with 6:18 remaining in the half.
W&M answered with an 11-0 run to take its largest lead of the opening 20 minutes. Gabe and Caleb Dorsey knocked down 3-pointers during the run with the latter extending the lead to 34-25 with 2:38 left in the half.
Northeastern scored the final seven points of the first half to close within 34-32 at the break, and then tallied the first four of the second half. Woods driving lay-up just 1:37 into the second half gave NU a 36-34 lead.
The Tribe used an 8-0 run to take a nine-point lead with 11:03 left. Lowe scored on a driving layup and then found Caleb Dorsey for a wing 3-pointer. An old-fashion 3-point play from Case put W&M on top 51-42.
The advantage reached 10, 60-50, on a Case lay-up off a nice pivot move and forced an NU timeout with 7:03 remaining.
Northeastern capped a 13-4 run with Turner’s game-tying 3-pointer. Doherty scored the first seven of the run.
