Tribe Men’s Basketball Battles in Loss at Hofstra

(Tribe Athletics)

Box Score

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — Gabe Dorsey knocked down eight 3-pointers and William & Mary battled on the road at Hofstra on Thursday night, before falling to the Pride, 64-55, inside the Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Dorsey’s eight 3-pointers were the third most in school history and he just missed his career high with 26 points. The junior guard was 9-of-17 from the floor and 8-of-14 from distance.

On the other side, the Tribe (7-13, 2-5 CAA) did a number defensively on Hofstra’s top two scores — Darlinstone Dubar (14 points) and Tyler Thomas (13 points). They combined for 27 points on just 10-of-31 shooting and 3-of-16 from 3. The duo entered the game among the CAA leaders in scoring, combining for over 40 points per game.

Leading by six at the half, Hofstra (11-9, 4-3 CAA) hit nine of its first 12 shots in the second in opening up its largest lead of the contest. Thomas scored seven during the stretch, hitting 3-of-4 shots. Jacco Fritz’s jumper at the 12:45 mark pushed the home team’s lead to 50-34.

A Dorsey 3-pointer followed by a Chase Lowe bucket in the paint cut the deficit to 57-49 with 3:29 remaining. The Tribe closed to its closest at 62-55 on a pair of Trey Moss free throws with 12 second remaining.

W&M knocked down 10 3-pointers on the night, but shot just 34.5% overall. Hofstra shot 42.9%, but the Tribe limited the Pride to just 29.6% (8-of-27) from 3. The Green and Gold held a 38-35 advantage on the glass.

Hofstra scored the game’s first eight points to jump out to the early lead. Durbar scored seven straight as part of a 9-0 run. A steal led to a fast-break dunk for Bryce Washington to push the Pride lead to 19-6 with 9:11 left in the opening half.

Dorsey got hot for the Tribe with a personal 14-4 run to close W&M within a single possession. He knocked down four 3-pointers during the stretch, before his pull-up jumper inside the arc, cut the deficit to 23-20 at the 5:09 mark.

Lowe turned in a nice stat line with seven points, 10 rebounds and four assists, while Moss was the only other W&M player in double figures with 10 points and five rebounds.

German Plotnikov scored a career-high 15 points to lead Hofstra, and Jaquon Carlos added eight points, nine rebounds, and six assists for the Pride.
