VPCC Men’s Basketball Ends Slide; Women Fall to Frederick Community College

HAMPTON — The Virginia Peninsula Community College men’s basketball team snapped a seven-game losing streak with an 86-75 victory over Emory Oxford College on Sunday, Jan. 14, while the women’s team lost a hard-fought battle against Frederick Community College on Saturday.

The men won one day after a 104-72 loss to Sandhills Community College. Both games were played at the Sandhills campus in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

Against Emory Oxford Sunday, the Gators took a 42-35 halftime lead. The advantage narrowed to one point before the Gators went on a run to go up by 21. Jaylin Davis led the way with 20 points. Kenny Page added 18 points and five steals, Chris Hayes had 14 points and seven rebounds, and Aidan Breathwaite chipped in 11 points.

On Saturday, in the loss to Sandhills, the Gators fell behind 58-28 at halftime. A more competitive second half was not enough to overcome the big deficit. Braithwaite scored 28 points, and Page added seven points and seven rebounds.

This week, the Gators play Camp CC on Jan. 17 at Lakeland High School, and at Washington Adventist University on Saturday, Jan. 20. The men don’t return home until Feb. 3 for a game against Mountain Gateway. The game will be played at Christopher Newport University.
