WILLIAMSBURG — When Julianna Molina, a self-taught home baker who specializes in French macarons, was invited to take part in Buddy Valastro’s contest for “The Greatest Baker,” she had no idea what was on the rise.
The national contest raises money for the B+ Foundation and its mission to provide financial assistance to families, fund childhood cancer research, bring awareness to the fight against pediatric cancer, and spread positivity.
Selected in the fall, Molina says she was super excited to participate. “Unfortunately, I am no longer in the competition, but it was a great opportunity for a great cause.”
Molina placed a very respectable third, and the contest is helping spread the word about the home-based baker.
Molina said she has loved macarons since she was a child. One day in 2022, she decided to teach herself how to make them, since there was no place local to purchase the French-styled cookie she adored.
“It was a big deal, because the process to make macarons is very difficult and technical. A lot of professional bakers won’t make them since they are pain,” laughed Molina, who before she began the process only considered herself someone who just liked baking at home. “I know it sounds crazy but, I just felt called to it.”
The first batch Molina considered a disaster, but, determined to recreate the delicious treat, she started on a second batch.
“That second batch came out absolutely perfect!” exclaimed Molina, who decided then and there this was the start of a new business.
Once Molina Macarons launched, the business was met with enthusiasm and support from her family, friends and community.
The former real estate agent has seen both her business and family grow in the year since. Now a mom to two small children, Molina stays busy with them, her supportive husband and fulfilling macaron orders.
“I have been very happy and content ever since I made this choice.” Molina continued, “I am super excited to see where else my business can go from here!”
Molina Macarons can be found at the Toano Open Air Farmers Market or by placing an order through Molina directly. Check out the Facebook page to see what new flavors and places Molinas Macarons will have in the future.
